How to Become a Scaffolding Supervisor: The CISRS Route

A scaffolding supervisor runs the job on site: the gangs, the labourers and apprentices, the paperwork, the safety and the handover, so the scaffolders can get on with building. Most come up through the trade, from scaffolder to advanced scaffolder, and then take the CISRS supervisor course. Employers want the card, but they want the years on the tools just as much.

What the job involves

A Manchester contractor's supervisor advert on ScaffJobs in October 2026 set it out plainly. The role covered:

  • running scaffold gangs, labourers and apprentices, and daily site operations
  • monitoring scaffold quality and compliance
  • coordinating labour, transport and materials
  • liaising with clients, principal contractors and site managers
  • site inspections and safety audits
  • permits, RAMS and site documentation
  • scaffold handovers and project completion

It is a leadership job as much as a technical one. A London contractor calls its supervisors "Black Hats" and asks for "experience of supervising gangs/small projects".

The route up

There is no shortcut past the tools. CISRS builds the ladder like this:

  1. Scaffolder. A CISRS Scaffolder (Tube & Fitting) cardholder can lead a gang in basic scaffold operations as defined in TG20. Our Part 1 vs Part 2 guide covers the training.
  2. Advanced Scaffolder. After at least 12 months on a Scaffolder (Tube & Fitting) card you can take the Advanced course. An Advanced cardholder is deemed competent to lead a gang in all scaffold operations, including complex design structures. See CISRS Advanced Scaffolder.
  3. Supervisor. The CISRS Manager/Supervisor course, below.

What employers expect on top is real experience. The Manchester advert wanted a CISRS Advanced Scaffolder card, at least 10 years in scaffolding, a full UK driving licence, and experience supervising gangs and mentoring apprentices and labourers.

The CISRS Manager/Supervisor course and card

The CISRS Scaffolding Manager/Supervisor course runs for five days and is aimed at people providing first-line supervision for scaffolding contractors: contracts managers, supervisors, foremen and non-working chargehands. CISRS says it is comparable to CITB's SMSTS and recognised by Build UK.

It covers the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, health and safety law, toolbox talk delivery, contract and commercial essentials, RAMS, employment law and temporary works supervision.

For the card you need:

  • the CISRS Supervisor course
  • a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at supervisory level, taken within two years

To renew, you take the two-day CISRS Supervisor Refresher and keep the supervisory-level test in date. The refresher is also open to CISRS Scaffolder and Advanced cardholders who hold a current SMSTS.

Where SSSTS and SMSTS fit

SSSTS and SMSTS are CITB's general site safety courses for supervisors and managers across construction, not scaffolding-specific ones. You will still see them on scaffolding adverts: the London contractor above asked for supervisors "with SSSTS or SMSTS". If you already hold SMSTS, it opens the CISRS refresher route. If you hold neither, the CISRS course is the one built around scaffolding.

What it pays

There is no official figure for scaffolding supervisors specifically. The nearest is the National Careers Service profile for a construction site supervisor: around £30,000 a year starting out and £60,000 experienced, over 40 to 45 hours a week. None of the supervisor adverts live on ScaffJobs in early October 2026 gave a salary. Industrial roles can be paid under the national engineering construction agreement instead: Bilfinger's own advert for a scaffold supervisor at Stanlow quoted NAECI rates.

Common questions

What qualifications does a scaffolding supervisor need?
The scaffolding-specific card is the CISRS Scaffolding Manager/Supervisor card: the five-day CISRS Manager/Supervisor course plus a CITB Health, Safety and Environment test at supervisory level, taken within two years. Employers often want an Advanced Scaffolder card and years on the tools as well.
How long is the CISRS supervisor course?
Five days. CISRS says it is comparable to CITB's SMSTS and is recognised by Build UK. It covers CDM, health and safety law, toolbox talks, commercial essentials, RAMS, employment law and temporary works supervision.
Do scaffolding supervisors need SSSTS or SMSTS?
Some employers ask for them. A London contractor on ScaffJobs in October 2026 wanted supervisors with SSSTS or SMSTS. CISRS's own course is the scaffolding-specific route, and CISRS lets Scaffolder or Advanced cardholders with a current SMSTS take its two-day supervisor refresher.
How do you renew a CISRS supervisor card?
With the two-day CISRS Supervisor Refresher course and a supervisory-level health and safety test taken within two years.
How much does a scaffolding supervisor earn?
There is no official figure for scaffolding supervisors specifically. The National Careers Service puts construction site supervisors at around £30,000 a year starting out and £60,000 experienced, over 40 to 45 hours a week.
